Our Impact

Funds raised from the SA Discovery Tour will go to Cancer Research projects at Flinders Foundation and Tour de Cure.

Tour de Cure was established in 2007 by three individuals with a crazy goal; to cure cancer.

Since then, Tour de Cure has raised over $117 million, funding 975 projects in research, support and prevention. We have also contributed to 141 significant cancer research breakthroughs.

As a cancer agnostic not-for-profit, our mission remains ‘Curing Cancer, Changing Lives’, and our desire to change the future of cancer, along with survivorship and improved treatments for current diagnoses.

Flinders Foundation, our SA Discovery Partner

Flinders Foundation works together with the community to support health and medical research and patient care to help change the lives of people and their families affected by a wide range of illnesses, diseases and social issues to create positive change both within our community, and across the globe.

They proudly support Flinders University and the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network – which includes Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital, the Repat Health Precinct, and community health sites.

With a strong focus on cancer, funds raised by Flinders Foundation support the dedicated cancer researchers and clinicians to make new discoveries and develop better ways to detect, treat and prevent cancer, while continuing to provide the best care possible to people and their families affected by cancer.

What have we funded?

2024 will be the fourth SA Discovery Tour, and the event so far has funded 13 research grants at the University of South Australia and Flinders Foundation.

In 2023 we funded the following research projects:

  • Head and Neck Cancer: Re-designing the head and neck cancer monitoring program: considering patient preferences and acceptability

  • Glioblastoma: Preclinical validation of a new molecular magnetic resonance imaging of glioblastoma towards improved image-guided treatment

  • Brain Cancer: Targeting tumour cell-blood vessels interactions and the blood-brain barrier for the development of more effective and personalised treatments for patients with brain cancer

  • All Cancers: Establishing a Research Platform to Support Personalised Dosing of Cancer Drugs

  • Myeloid leukaemia: Effect of epigenetic modifier gene mutations on the rate of treatment-free remission for patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia

$10,000 Community Grants

Access to cancer treatment for people living in rural communities can often mean travel away from home and local support can be limited. That’s why on every tour, Tour de Cure donates $10,000 each night to local cancer support projects which are presented at our community dinners. Discover where the $10k community grants went to on SA Tour 2024.

Why does Research matter?

Research and clinical practice go hand in hand – for every successful cancer treatment, there are countless hours – and often years – of research that have informed the practice and ensured the patient will achieve the best possible outcome. Flinders Foundation funds research that:

  • Develops new treatments or drugs

  • Prevents cancer

  • Improves quality of life

  • Improves understanding of different cancers

  • Helps us to understand the emotional and physical support that people need when they are living with cancer

The research we’ve funded has saved the lives of many thousands of people in Australia and all over the world.
